Marcus Simplicius Vitalis, an ordinary Roman soldier, was first created as an exercise in empathy for trainee teachers taking history as a specialist pathway. Trainees were asked to imagine what he was thinking about as he sat polishing his helmet, in a barracks somewhere near Hadrian's Wall in the second century AD. Over time I have produced several versions to keep up with changing fashions in representation.
